Kids Guitar Lessons – Let The Search Begin:
We had our daughter ask if she could learn to play the guitar. Having given lessons for a long time, 8 years old was quite young to get kids started on lessons, but it is do-able. She was starting to get some exposure to music in school and was learning the basics of notation and basic theory. And……The question kept coming up.
She was quite tall for her age so we decided to get her the guitar for Christmas.
Next came the inevitable – We had to find a guitar for our budget of $150.00 to $200.00.
I searched high and low, both on-line and in music stores. Finally I found it! The perfect guitar for our 8 year-old. It was a Johnson JG – 610 Guitar. They were available on Amazon for $89.00. They are 3/4 size and just the perfect size. Even if you need to have some work done on the action by a repair shop, it was still worth it.
The Johnson Guitar Beat Our Budget:
That beat our budget and left some extra for a case, guitar picks a tuner and other assorted goodies.
Things were looking very bright indeed.
I must admit that at $89.00 I was a bit skeptical of what we were going to get. Oh well, Amazon has a great return policy and if it is simply terrible at worst we can just get our money back.
The Day of Arrival:
When the guitar arrived, I was very pleasantly surprised. First of all it came through in great shape. The setup was very reasonable – what I mean by that is I haven’t adjusted anything yet, and I am ALWAYS tinkering with guitar action. Certainly it was good enough to start out on our lesson voyage. When we progress into some of the multi-finger chords, I will need to lower the strings at nut a bit. If you want to take a crack at doing this your self, take a look at this article on Guitar Nut Adjustment.

What Can You Expect Out of This Guitar?
I know our expectations would probably be about the same as any other parent. That is to have the child learn and explore if the guitar is the right instrument for them without being discourage because of a poorly made instrument. That is certainly answered here as this guitar more than met our expectations. Our daughter loves it and will grow out of it when she is ready. We assume that will be in one or two years. By that time she will be well on her way and we will be much more comfortable spending more money on a intermediate class guitar.
