Finger on First Fret

First note that when a string is played without any left hand fingers on the Fretboard, the strings are said to be played “Open”.

One of the most important things about playing the guitar is the position of your left hand fingers on the Fretboard. If you place you finger on the fretboard, in the correct location, which is directly behind the Fret. If you look at the photograph above note how the finger looks like it is almost right on top of the fret. It’s not, but directly behind the fret. If you place your finger here the note will be:
Easier to play
Sound clearer
Be louder
You will be able to play faster

Finger the Third Fret

Typical Left Hand Finger Positions:
The first finger (index finger) plays notes on the first fret
The Second Finger (middle finger) plays notes on the second fret
The Third Finger (ring finger) plays notes on the third fret
The Fourth Finger (pinkie finger) plays notes on the fourth fret

The rule above for finger that you use will be broken and broken quite often, but when in doubt, use this rule. You can’t go too far wrong.

Also this rule applies to ALL the strings the same.

Now lets talk about how the finger presses down on the string. As shown in the photos, the string is pressed down with the tip of each finger. Not the side or any other part of your finger. You finger should stand up straight and press straight down with the very tip.

But This Hurts My Fingers!!
Yep it will at first and it may hurt for several weeks. You have to gradually build up calluses on the ends of your fingers. This will protect your fingers and you will no longer feel the string pain. If you really want to play the guitar a LOT and your finger are too sore, you can do what I did. Put the white medical tape over the ends of your fingers and then wrap it around your finger too. This will protect your fingers, but you should play without the tape too to build your calluses.
