Note Math Quiz 1:
I just came up with this one on the spur on the moment. Olivia has had a bit of trouble keeping her timing straight and knowing just what is what with dotted notes, whole notes, half note sixteenth notes, well and you know what I mean.
So I decided to relate the notes to a math problem.Something these kids are faced with each and every day in school. Every note has a fixed value – so why not just add and subtract them? Hey – this one even made me think!
The beginning of the quiz is really the first image at the top of the article. Review each and every note and the amount of time or beats that is given to each one. They are all shown there so no need to go looking anyplace else.
The easiest way to take this test is to print off the quiz and place the note values directly below each note, along with the add or subtract symbol, then simply add ‘em up. Answers are printed below the test.
Have fun with this one and if you “ace” it you can consider yourself a better musician than before you took the quiz.
Note Math Quiz:

Also, look back through the guitar lessons for the first few months. You will see in both the Tab Notes on the Score and in the Text of the lessons all of the items that are one this quiz. We will have another quiz soon, but we need to learn a few more symbols before we do this. In the meantime, brush up on this quiz, take it however many times you need to – to get a perfect score. That is what we are after.
Answers To Above Questions:

6.) 1/2+1/2+1-1=1
7.) 3+1-1/2=3-1/2
8.) 1 1/2-1+1 1/2+1/2=2 1/2
9.) 3/4+3/4+3-1=3-1/2
10.) 1/2+3/4-1 1/2+2=1 3/4
11.) 1/4+1/4-1/2+3/4=3/4
12.) 3/4-1/2+3+1+1-1 1/2=3 3/4
13.) 1/4+1/4+1/4+1/4-3/8+3/8=1
14.) 4-3-1-3/4+1/2=-1/4
15.) 1/2-3/4+1 1/2+1+1/2+1/2=3 1/4
16.) 2+1+1/2-1+1/2+1/2+1/2=4
17.) 1 1/2+4+3/8+1/4+3/8+1/4=6 3/4
18.) 3/4-3/4-3+1 1/2-2+1 1/2=-2
Was That Really Hard or What?
I got a little carried away toward the end. Try to do your best. Some of the dotted notes really tax your ability to put the note values together and then add and subtract as well. It’s a great exercise though and you will certainly know your notes a whole lot better after going through that a few times!
