It’s A Small World Verse – Text
It’s a Small World will bring back memories of Disney World or Disney Land if you are lucky enough to have traveled there. Kids love the ride and they love the song.

So we have given it some life here in this next lesson. We now go into the Verse of the song. I realize this is a bit backwards, but the Chorus is so well known and much easier to memorize, we tackled that first.

About This Lesson:

I am backing off just a bit from last week’s lesson. Did you feel that one was a bit much? If not – that is great! If it was, just relax and I will take it down a few notches on this lesson. We still have some major goals to meet this week, but they will be much easier for you to meet them.

The biggest lesson in this lesson in the use of down-up strokes. I want you to begin learning how to do those. Be sure to read our article on Down-Up Strokes to know what to do and how to play them.

Learning Points:

Down Up Strokes:
We are talking only about the right hand now. The pick first plays down on one note. Then you play up on the next note. This is the only way that you can play with any speed and control. So would hard on this.

Eighth Notes:
No dotted notes this lesson (whew!), but we have plenty of eighth notes thown in there. These will naturally speed things up as eighth notes are played twice as fast as quarter notes.

Chords:
Also, we have published several articles on chords. I would like you to read at least the article on Chords in the Key of C Major and A Minor. Also read How To Read Chord Diagrams. Try and figure these out. We will be having lessons on chords right around the corner.

About the Tab Notes:
The hardest thing to pick out on this weeks lesson is the timing. The timing is not indicated in the TAB staff and you will have to look above at the notatation staff to get the proper timing.

This is very importaint on this lesson as we have a lot of eighth notes, which means doubling the speed in those areas

Articles You Should Read:

How to Play Down Up Strokes: Get aquainted with this technique and learn how to do it.
How to Hold the Guitar Pick: This will be really important with the down up strokes and attaining speed.
Note and Rest Timing: Brush up on Eighth, Quarter, Half and Whole Notes. They are all used in this song.
Chords in the Key of C Major and A Minor.

Goals:

The ultimate goal for this lesson is to be able to play up and down strokes properly. Look at the score. Below the TAB staff you will see symbols for down and up strokes for each and every note in this song. The Down stroke lookls like a upside down “U” and the Up Stroke looks like a “V”.

Notice that all down strokes are used on the down-beat. In other words “on” the beat. If you count 1 2 3 4, each of those would be a down stroke. If you count 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &, each note on the & would be an up stroke. We call this on the up-beat. Confused? Go to the score and work on it. Read the Down Up article and it will come to you – honestly.

Goal #1:
Be able to play all of the down ups by the end of the week without thinking about what has to be played were. That is a tall order, but I would like you to try. If you can’t do it – keep trying in future weeks.

Goal #2:
Try to play this song at 65 bpm by the end of the lesson week. If you can’t reach that, write down how fast you can go each day and see if you can “push it” just a little bit each day. Eave 1 bpm increase is progress.

This is were the Guitar Pro Speed Trainer really excells. It gets you there without you hardly even realizing it.

Goal #3:
After you have the verse down good, go right into the chorus you learned a couple of weeks back. Play the two and see how good it makes you feel.

Goal #4:
See how many of the Chords in the key of C Major and A Minor you can play by the end of the week.

What You Should Practice This Week:

Again, speed is not that important here. Speed always comes naturally and you do not need to practice on so much speed here. It is far more important you get your timing correct, get your left hand finger correct and your down ups right.

I would rather have you play the song half as fast and get all of these technical thing correct than to have you rip through the song using the wrong LH fingers and terrible timing.

See our How To Practice article:
If you are having trouble with your practice techniques, or can’t seem to get “in the groove”, review the article on How to Practice and this will help you develop a consistent practice method.

Help Us Out:

Lastly and most importantly, give us feedback, either good or bad. We want to improve this site and we want kids to learn how to play the guitar. If you have suggestions for us, leave a comment. If you appreciate these lessons, leave a comment on that too.
