Guitar Tuners:
With today’s technology there are an incredible number of resources you can use to tune your guitar. Depending on the location and what technology you have access to, you may want to pursue several different options. I will break the possible locations down and give you options.
Practice at Home:
If you are practicing at home or other location where you have Internet access, you can get a dizzying array of electronic tuners right on line. We have one on the home page of Ultimate Guitar OnLine you can use. Just set the seconds of delay and start it. It will go through each open string until you kill it.

Electronic Tuners:
I love these gagets. They are small enough to keep in your case and you can have access to them wherever you take your guitar. They operate with needles that are centered for each string or an array of lights that tell you when you have arrived at the proper pitch for each string.
There basically two kinds of digital tuners. The first kind are what is called the “clip-ons”. They clip on the headpiece of your guitar and can sense the note vibrations through the head and mic of the tuner. Just keep them attached you you can fine tune at any time, very conveniently.
The second kind of tuner is what I call the in-case variety. This is intended to keep in a drawer or in your guitar case storage compartment and is taken out when needed. I have both kinds and like the features of both. The stay-in-your-case variety has more features available such as digital metronomes and more, so if you would desire this you may want to lean that way.
My Favorite Clip-Ons:

Korg GA-30 Ultra Compact Guitar and Bass Tuner
Boss TU-80C Chromatic Tuner & Metronome I have this one and I love it. It has worked flawlessly for as long as I’ve had it.
iPhone Aps:
iPhone and other smart phones have guitar tuner apps that you can purchase for a few bucks. Pretty handy and cheap.
When Technology Fails:
What happens when you loose Internet service, or your battery dies on that super deluxe digital tuner/metronome/mp3/tv/video/do anything else tuner??
The Tuning Fork and your own built-in tuner to the rescue!! Yep – always have a good Tuning Fork in your case. They are always in perfectly in tune, never need batteries, or Internet service. Just get one string in tune and use your Built-In Tuner called your Ear to tune the rest of the strings.
Don’t know how to do that? You should – and you will because I will teach you how to tune your guitar without the aid of all these fancy devices. Buy boy, they sure are nice and fast! Or are they?
I can tune a guitar in about 30 seconds. It comes from experience and ear training. I tune by a getting out the trusty Tuning Fork and tune the first string. It’s off to the races after that. I can hear how when all of the open strings are in tune after that.
